The Liberal Party was formed on October 5th 1990 in Skopje, with the fusion of two reformist oriented and centrist parties – the Union of Reformist Forces of Macedonia and the Young Progressive Democratic Party. Stojan Andov was elected President of LP. He was also the fist President of the plural Assembly of RM (1990-94) executing this duty during a part of the second mandate (1994-96). In this period LP was in the Macedonian Government.
Realizing the lack of reforms, failure of the selected privatizing model and the criminalization of the society, the Liberal Party indicated these circumstances in the state. After not finding support within its coalition partners for their overcoming, LP left the Government in February 1996.

In order to strengthen the centrist, civic option in Republic of Macedonia, LP merged with the former Democratic Party and created the Liberal Democratic Party. Unfortunately, in less than two years period this party proved not only unable to fulfill its goal but oriented towards creation of a center-left coalition with the party that inherited the former Union of Communists of Macedonia whose Government LP left in 1996.
Disagreeing with this, the founders of the Liberal Party decided to revive LP on December 23rd 1999 and Risto Gushterov was elected for its President, who executed this duty up to June 2001.
In the year 2000 the Liberal Party appeared single on the local elections winning 40 members of councils all over Macedonia. In November the same year LP entered the Government of RM as a part of the center-right coalition along with VMRO-DPMNE and DPA being a part of the executive power up to September 2002, since when it is in opposition.
The coalition with VMRO-DPMNE continues up to this day and in 2004 the two parties signed Charter on Strategic Coalition and as such appear together on all elections since 2002.
In this fifteen years period LP had a total of 58 members of Parliament, 12 ministers, three Deputies of the Government’s Prime Minister and four members of LP represented Republic of Macedonia abroad as its ambasadors.
In this space we would also like to remember and thank all our members who have built in their life striving for the principles they followed with great enthusiasm and firm determination in the values of liberalism. Here we would especially like to mention those who were amongst our founders: Hristo Koshka, Gavrilo Gavrilski, Stevo Yankovski, Mihailo Zoric, Ivan Ivanov, Dzemail Maksut, Todosie Paunov, Yusuf Voynika, Vladimir Pavlovski, Stevo Crvenkovski, Nikola Tushev…
